The typeface POMPEJI is inspired by ancient Pompeian graffiti. Its precise, angular forms recall the act of scratching with a stylus. Geometric yet irregular, the typeface features linear shapes, breaks in ascenders and descenders, and a strong rhythm of connections between letters. Numerous ligatures and alternates evoke the expressive, spontaneous character of historical inscriptions. TRUE TO ITS ORIGINS The font POMPEJI was applied directly to a wall. Nowhere else are the ephemeral and expressive qualities of graffiti more tangible. Visible and touchable, these graffiti invite encounters in public space. Lining the hallway in the Muthesius are seven quotes from ancient: popular literature, alongside fragments, greetings, and vulgarities. Together, they offer a glimpse into the rich culture of Pompeian graffiti — while presenting the typeface as an integrated part of its spatial environment. BA Thesis, 2021
